What is the difference between a Ceramic Coating and a Paint Sealant?

Both ceramic coatings and paint sealants have unique functions and offer different solutions based on what your goals are for having your car detailed.

Paint sealants typically provide hydrophobic protection anywhere from 3-12 months and are a much more budget friendly option when it comes to price point. This is because most paint sealants are applied without doing any paint enhancement or correction before application.

Ceramic coatings on the other hand are much more durable when it comes to the protection they offer. The paint enhancement and correction prior to applying the ceramic coating provides a high quality gloss in the paint. With proper maintenance, you can expect a ceramic coating to last 2+ years compared to the 3+ months of a paint sealant.

Paint sealants and ceramic coatings often work hand in hand over the course of time. You can actually use paint sealants to freshen up the performance of ceramic coatings to revamp their hydrophobic performance.

What is a Ceramic Coating?

A Ceramic Coating is a chemical polymer solution that is applied to the exterior of your vehicle to help protect your paint against external damage. It chemically bonds with the paint of your car to provide an additional layer of hydrophobic and antistatic protection.

What are the benefits of a Ceramic Coating?

The first thing you’ll notice is how much easier it is to clean your car. Ceramic coatings have antistatic properties that help prevent the adhesion of dirt and other abrasives from entrapping themselves into your clear coat. These antistatic properties, as well as the hydrophobic properties make your car much easier to wash.

How is it done?

Your car comes in and is hand washed from top to bottom. The body, glass, wheels, wheel wells and exhaust tips are all addressed.

After the washing process we begin decontaminating using clay and chemical iron dissolvers to remove any harsh abrasives lodged in the clear coat.

Following decontamination is paint correction. Paint correction is a term used to describe the process of buffing and polishing defects out of the clear coat of your vehicle. Some defects may include but are not limited to swirl marks, holograms, water spotting, surface scuffs, and light to moderate scratches.

We then use a preparation spray to remove any remands of polish before applying the coating.

Can I go through a car wash after getting a Ceramic Coating?

That is completely up to you. Many people who enjoy going through car washes opt for one of our paint sealant packages or the Level 1 Ceramic Coating Package. This is because car washes are known for causing micro abrasions in your vehicles surface, and both paint sealant options as well as the Level 1 Ceramic Coating option do not focus too heavily on removing surface defects like the Level 2 Ceramic Coating Package does.

If you get the Level 2 Ceramic Coating Package then we would highly advise against going through a car wash because it would put micro abrasions in place of where we removed the previous ones.

What kind of soap should I use on my Ceramic Coated vehicle?

Any automotive pH neutral soap is good to use for a vehicle with a ceramic coating. The high or low pH soaps and cleaners can begin to break down the coating over time, so using a pH neutral soap is ideal.

Can I wax my Ceramic Coated vehicle?

You can, but you don't really have to. If you are looking to add an extra layer of protection over your ceramic coating, we recommend using a paint sealant or a spray wax rather than traditional paste wax.

How often should I wash my car?

Washing your car once a week is ideal. Washing it every 2 weeks is also a good rule of thumb.

When you start getting into the habit of washing your car every month to every couple of months, that is when you give dirt, brake dust, and mineral deposits inside of hard water a chance to start lodging itself on your car's surface.
